After hitting the beach and climbing Pointe du Hoc,Pfc.Mackey and two other Rangers were trying to go inland.Two rangers remained to cover them and still watch the Observation Post that was occupied and raining down fire on the Rangers on the beach.Pfc.Mackey made it to the end of the trench and there German gun fire from the Observation Post rained down on the three Rangers killing Pfc.Mackey.The two other Rangers made it inland.
